Lost Theory #1

If you’re not watching Lost on Wednesday nights you really should be. It’s the best drama I have ever seen on television. Better than CSI. Better than early seasons of The X-Files. In short, it about the survivors of a plane crash who are trying to survive on a seemingly deserted island. But it goes far deeper than that.
Lost doesn’t have the “small” feel that most TV shows have. Instead, it feels more like watching a serial movie with an overarching mystery slowly evolving each week. Each episode gives us a few more clues and makes you think about the possible answers. When was the last time a TV show made you think? Unlike the “mythology” episodes of The X-Files which sometimes felt like Chris Carter was making it up as he went along (especially near the end of the series) Lost feels like the writers know exactly what they are doing with each episode.
So I’ve been thinking about the back stories we’ve seen for some of the characters so far. I’ve been trying to think of a unifying theme for each of them; something they all have in common. What I’ve come up with is “reconciliation”. Each of the back stories has involved someone seeking to reconcile of a broken relationship. Also, each of those attempts at reconciliation has ended in failure. I’m not sure what that means but it’s something to keep in mind.
I think Locke is a special case. He was wheelchair bound before the crash but after the crash he could walk perfectly without the effects muscle atrophy. He also has seen the “monster” and lived. Recalling the experience he said, “I have seen the heart of this island, and it is beautiful.”
I had to think a bit harder about what relationship he was trying to reconcile before the crash but I think he was trying to reconcile his relationship with God. He described the “Walkabout” as being a very spiritual journey which he really wanted to experience but couldn’t because the tour guide wouldn’t let him go due to him not being able to walk.
I think Locke has the ability to make small miracles happen. We’ve never seen him actually kill any animals but he is always able to supply meat for the rest of the survivors. He seemed to make Charile’s (Dominic Monaghan) guitar appear right when he needed it to. He seems to have a special insight into people’s character and knows exactly what to say when someone is particularly troubled.
I don’t think it was coincidence that Locke used a moth’s cocoon on a tree to make to point to Charlie and later in the episode a moth (the same moth?) showed Charlie the way out of the caved-in cave.
This brings me to my next theory. The “monster” we’ve seen in the first few episodes is not a monster at all. It’s God. I could be wrong about this but that’s my theory at the moment.
There’s still other questions I have no theories for. Why did some people die in the crash and why did some survive? What’s the difference between the cave dwellers and the beach dwellers? Who are the dead bodies found in the caves? What’s the deal with the 16-year old distress signal? Why was there a Polar Bear on the island?
Anyway, if you haven’t been watching check out the official website to get caught up on the story and then start watching it Wednesday nights on ABC.
